ITINERARY

Day 1
HOBART – ORFORD VIA MARIA ISLAND NATIONAL PARK
Distance : 78km Time : +/- 1 hour
Upon picking up your Hi Top at our Hobart branch, a short 5 minute drive from the Hobart airport, set your GPS for Triabunna where you can catch the ferry over to Maria Island for a day trip exploring this remote island treasure. With no cars and no shops, Maria Island is an oasis of amazing trails, beautiful wildlife spotting and an insight into Tasmania’s rich convict history. Some highlights to visit while on the island: Do the two hour walk which takes you through the Darling convict settlement World Heritage listed area Visit the ever beautiful Painted and Fossil Cliffs Explore the impressive coastline via a scenic cruise Brave the cold and have a swim or snorkel at one of the many stunning beach located around the island Do some wildlife spotting. Maria island is rife with wombats and Tasmanian devils After spending the day soaking up all the natural beauty Maria Island has to offer, head back on the ferry and over to Orford where you can set up camp at Orford Holiday Park across the road from the iconic Raspins Beach.
Day 2
ORFORD TO SWANSEA
Distance : 60km Time : +/- 40 min
A popular bushwalk in Swansea is the Three Thumbs Track – a 4 km loop that takes you through the Wielangta Forest. The walk takes you through rain and eucalypt forests with breathtaking views of Maria Island, Orford and Spring Bay. After enjoying a much deserved coffee after your walk, hit the road to experience probably one the most scenic coastal drives: the hour and a half drive north toward Freycinet Peninsula. Highlights along the way: Enjoy a glass of wine at Milton Vineyard Drive around the ever beautiful Mayfield Bay Coastal Reserve Watch the black swans and pelicans at the Moulting Lagoon wetlands At the end of the day, head on back to Swansea and spend the night at Swansea Holiday Park
Day 3
SWANSEA TO BICHENO

Wineglass Bay, TAS
Before heading to your camping destination of Bicheno, take the turn-off to Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park (Enquire about fees at the park), one of Tasmania’s most iconic coastal regions. The national park offers a number of attractions: Walk the 11 km, about 2.5 hours return, Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach circuit starting from the Wineglass Bay Lookout Drive along the eastern side of the Peninsula to Sleepy Bay and on toward Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Friendly Beaches Treat yourself to fresh seafood and local wine at Freycinet Lodge Continue up north to experience the ever delightful penguins parading about their beach-side burrows after dark as part of the Bicheno Penguin Tours. You can expect to get up close and personal with these cute little creatures, while not disturbing their natural state. Fun fact: Penguins bite toes! So keep those feet covered and dress warmly. Spend the night at Bicheno Caravan Park.
Day 4
BICHENO TO ST HELENS

After you have explored the Gulch and Blowhole, head on over to East Coast Natureworld, a short 8 km drive north of Bicheno. Here you can see Tasmanian devils, wombats, snakes, birdlife and many other animals in their natural environment. More attractions on your way up to St Helens include: Take a tranquil walk through Douglas Apsley National Park Savour the scenic coastal vistas all the way to Chain Lagoons before turning off and heading inland via Elephant Pass. And remember to stop for pancakes at the renowned Mount Elephant Pancakes Walk along the pristine white sands of the beachside towns of Beaumaris and Scamander The pretty fishing village of St Helens is situated on the shores of Georges Bay and is the base for some serious game fishing. Check for available fishing charters and boat hire. While in St Helens you can enjoy: St Helens History Room: A showcase of the regions historical Chinese tin-mining history, Georges Bay indigenous people, whalers and sailors. End your Great Eastern Drive by setting up camp at Big4 St Helens Caravan Park.
Day 5
ST HELENS TO DEVONPORT VIA LAUNCESTON

The final Tasmanian leg of your journey takes you to Devonport via Launceston before you board The Spirit of Tasmania to Melbourne. With our relocation special, you are eligible for free travel for one traveller aboard the Spirit. Some sights to see along the way: Binalong Bay to experience the exquisite Bay of Fires, home to the Bay of Fires Winter Arts Festival Visit Scottsdale: one of Tasmania’s most agreeable towns. If mountain biking is your thing, pay a visit to the North East Rail Trail. Stop by Cataract Gorge in Launceston. This charming patch of wilderness in the city centre has a myriad of walking opportunities, an idyllic suspension bridge, onsite restaurant and the longest single span chairlift in the country. Drop by House of Anvers just outside of Devonport to get your fill of delicious chocolate treats. The milkshakes are a must Once in Devonport, head on over to the Spirit to begin the seabound leg of your journey towards Melbourne.
