14 DAYS IN TASMANIA:  THE CITY TO THE WEST COAST WILDERNESS

Tasmania is quickly becoming the ultimate Motorhome holiday destination. Whether it’s an adventurous family holiday or a much-awaited romantic getaway, there are just so many things to see and do in the Island State.

As well as an adventurous wonderland, Tasmania is a truly idyllic place to relax. This is thanks to its clean air, natural wonders and iconic wildlife.

So, you’ve decided on Tasmania but are overwhelmed by all the destination choices?

We have compiled an impressive 14-day Tasmanian itinerary to help you see some of the state’s most iconic landmarks and natural wonders.

Hobart (3 nights)

Once you pick up your motorhome, head towards the city and you’ll soon see why Tasmania is where everyone wants to be! As you drive over the iconic Tasman Bridge, you’ll have exquisite views of Kunyanyi/Mount Wellington. Begin your holiday on the weekend, so you can stop at the famous Salamanca Market – fill your motorhome with delicious local treats and fresh produce.

Much like the locals, you won’t want to feel rushed in Hobart – so spend a few days here.

Launceston (1-2 nights)

The drive to Launceston from Hobart is just incredible – full of lush hills, historic buildings, and plenty of farm life! Locals love to stop for a short rest in Campbelltown before arriving in the heart of Launceston.

Launceston has an urban café lifestyle. In the CBD, locals worship their coffee, beer and mid-morning brunches. Whether you lounge around the city or visit the famous attractions – it’s worth settling in here!

There are some great central holiday parks in Launceston that will give you convenient access to the CBD, Cataract Gorge, or a fantastic day trip to the Tamar Valley.  Be sure to visit City Park – Strangely enough, you will find huge monkey enclosure there!

Penguin (1 night)

One of the sweetest small towns in the state, Penguin boasts coastal drives, amazing walking trails and a scenic waterfront to have lunch. A fun game for the kids is to count the penguins along the way! From rubbish bins to the famous Giant Penguin, statues are sprawled over this proud town. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some real penguins!

Corinna (1 day)

You’ve explored Tasmania’s cities and small towns, now it’s time to embrace the natural wonders of Tasmania!  On your way you will pass through Stanley and the Arthur River – if you’ve got the time, stop here for a scenic lunch!

To experience the state in its purest form, visit Corrina and take a walk among the Tasmanian Tarkine. Alternatively, take a river cruise to see the beautiful Lovers Falls and learn the curious history behind the Pieman River.

Strahan (2 nights)

Be sure to call Strahan home for a night or three – you must explore this stunning town! Kids will enjoy taking the West Coast Wildness Railway train, which will see you travel through a rainforest!

Be sure to book tickets to the town’s unique theatre experience. The Ship That Never Was is a hilarious, dramatic live production that has been showing since 1994!

If you’re seeking romance over family entertainment, stop at 42º Restaurant for a scenic date overlooking the river.

The Gordon River Cruise is the town’s most popular attraction – and for good reason! This 6-hour cruise will leave you awe-struck. A truly unmissable way to see the region.

Another iconic spot in Strahan is the Henty Dunes – a desert amid the Tasmanian rainforest! Weather you choose to toboggan down the dunes or have a relaxing picnic beside the state’s longest beach – you’ll never forget your time here.

Queenstown (2 nights)

For a small daily fee, you can call the incredible Lake Burbury Camping Ground home! It’s located on the edge of the World Heritage Wilderness Area, the perfect spot to rest, recuperate and take in the glorious mountain views from your motorhome! This historic town has a quaint shopping strip, a local pub, and a unique array of things to do.  We suggest you:

Lake St Clair – Cradle Mountain (3 nights)

This is the part of the trip locals and visitors get most excited for! An hour and a half drive from Queenstown, you will be surrounded by some of Tasmania’s most pristine nature, wilderness, & wildlife. When motorhoming in Australia, it doesn’t get much better than calling Cradle Mountain home.

Whether you choose to take the 2 hour Crater Lake Walk or the 20 Minute Enchanted Walk – it is a hike you will never forget.

Enjoy a unique animal experience by booking a Tasmanian Devil Feeding tour, or relax at your campsite and wait for quolls, echidnas, wombats or local currawongs to visit you!

Be sure to stop somewhere with an incredible mountain view and enjoy a picturesque lunch outside your motorhome.

When not exploring the town’s natural wonders, we highly recommend a visit to The Wall. This is an unmissable art installation made entirely from Huon Pine Timber that depicts the extraordinary history of Tasmania.

Mount Field National Park (1 night)

Mount Field is an ideal place for a final stop before dropping your motorhome back!

Be sure to wander Russell Falls – a waterfall so beautiful that it featured on Australia’s first-ever postal stamp.

Mount Field offers an array of motorhome-friendly campsites, so spend your final night lounging within the beautiful Tasmanian wilderness before making the trip back to the branch.
