What to do this summer: 8 quintessential Australian experiences
Think of an Australian summer and picture wild surf beaches, the good ol’ Aussie BBQ and lively summer festivals: it’s the perfect time of year for a motorhome adventure in the sun. But, what should you do if you visit the land down under at this exciting time of year? These 8 quintessential summer experiences will ensure you have fun in the sun and make the most of every moment of your Australian motorhome adventure.
1. Go to the beach
It doesn’t matter where you’re travelling, whether it’s in far tropical north Queensland or down south in the state of Tasmania, you will never be far from a world-class Australian beach. At this time of year the white sand is packed with surfers and holiday-goers making the most of the laidback Aussie beach atmosphere. Pull up beside the ocean, grab your beach towel and become part of the summer scenery. If you’re looking to escape Bondi Beach type crowds, we recommend driving a little further off the beaten track to hidden coves and secluded bays. Pull out the camp table and chairs and drink in the sunshine!
2. Encounter a music festival
The Australian summer attracts the world’s finest music artists and there’s no better place to see them all at once than at one of the country’s famous music festivals. Whether you’re bringing in the New Year at the Falls Festival in Marion Bay, Tasmania or throwing your hands in the air at Soundwave around the country, your motorhome adventure in Australia is not complete without moshing along with the summer crowds.
3. Attend a BBQ
There’s nothing that says summer more than a true blue Aussie BBQ. And, the best part of this experience is that it’s cheap and available country wide! Make the most of your caravan park’s BBQ area by getting the family together and putting some snags on the barbie Aussie-style.
4. Eat and drink
Over the summer months, some of the country’s finest fresh produce can be found country-wide. Nothing quite beats pulling up beside the beach and enjoying a just-caught cray or freshly shucked oysters. Pick your own berries at a local farm, collect apples from an honesty box on the side of the road or dine at one of the many alfresco restaurants around the country. No matter where you choose to go on your motorhome adventure, your tastebuds will be rewarded with seasonal summer delights delivered straight from the producer to your plate.
5. Get amongst the sporting scene
The summer months are the highlight of the cricket season with matches taking place around the country. Even if you’re not a mad- sports supporter, experience a game just to soak up an authentic dose of the Australian sporting atmosphere. In January, the Australian Tennis Open takes place in Melbourne, and thousands flock to the Yarra River to get a glimpse of
the world’s best tennis stars.
6. Ride the waves
Now is your chance to take that surf lesson you’ve always wanted to. From laidback Byron Bay in New South Wales to Margaret River, Western Australia, you will find prime surf beaches at your every turn and local experts ready and willing to teach! It’s no problem if you don’t have a surf board, most places hire them for just a small fee.
7. Take the coastal road
There’s no doubt that December to February is the perfect time of year for a self-drive adventure. Instead of focusing on the destination, think about the journey and encounter some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery on the planet. For the ultimate coastal route, we recommend the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.
8. Take part in the Australia Day festivities
The 26th of January is the holy grail of Australia’s national public holidays and marks the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of British ships back in 1788. Australia Day festivities can be found all over the country, from iconic Bondi Beach to Southbank in Brisbane. It doesn’t matter where you are, throw some snags on the barbie, display the Australian flag and celebrate with friends on your motorhome adventure.
