Great Alpine Road

Total distance: 310km

Recommended days: 2-4

Best time to do the route: year-round

You’ve heard of the Great Ocean Road, but have you heard of the Great Alpine Road?

This route is one of the best road trips in Victoria any time of year because it is Victoria’s highest road and offers such a range of diverse landscapes you’d be silly not to embark on the adventure!

This road trip will take you from Wangaratta through the Ovens Valley, past the alpine resort of Mount Hotham and down to the beautiful Gippsland Lakes.

Since the Great Alpine Road is sealed, you can drive along it at any time. The road takes you through mountain ranges, plunging valleys, lush rainforests, and past the incredible Victorian vineyards leading you to the waterways on the Gippsland Coast.

What makes this road trip so worth doing is not only the breathtaking scenery you’ll see along the way but the adventures you can experience, such as cycling and camping in the summer to skiing and snowboarding in the winter!

No matter what time of year you decide to drive along the Great Alpine Road, you won’t be disappointed with what you’ll see along the way.

South Gippsland Highway

Total distance: 1000km+

Best time to do the route: summer and spring

If you’ve done the Great Ocean Road and love coastal drives, then one of the road trips in Victoria you have to do is the South Gippsland Highway!

Start your adventure by visiting the beautiful yet secluded beaches in Wilsons Promontory National Park. Some of the best things to see and do in Wilsons Prom are Whisky Beach, Mt Oberon hike or the three-day Southern Circuit to step foot on the southernmost point of mainland Australia.

After a day or two in Wilsons Prom, head to Tarra Bulga National Park for contrasting scenery. Here you will pick up Jurassic Park vibes leading into the national park. If you love avoiding the crowds, head up Avon-Mt Hedrick Scenic Reserve to go for a dip in the river off the Channels Walk.

Continue on your journey towards the Greater Lakes Entrance area, where you can get a boat to take you out to the Lakes National Park, where you can spend the afternoon on a secluded beach!

As you make your way west, head inland via Deddick Valley and, for a serene camping spot near the must-see Snowy River, park up for the night at the Little River Junction Campground.

Grampians Way

Total distance: 332km

From there, you can choose to head north or south around the national park. No matter which way you decide to drive, there is a lot of stunning scenery to see along the way and lots of hikes to do.

Choose where you want to camp for the night and visit all of the lookouts and hikes this road trip has to offer, and since the national park is so big, you’re bound to discover hidden gems along the way!
